Linux Desktop is Complete

written by edavis on March 4th, 2006 @ 05:43 PM

I finally have my Linux desktop again. I am running “Ubuntu”:http://www.ubuntu.com/ on it with GNOME. I am still keeping the Mac Mini around (mostly because my iPod) but it is now setup to run headless with a VNC server.

Anywho, the specs on this desktop are decent, nothing to write home about but still plenty of power for now. I was able to outfit it with 1.5GB of DDR RAM that I have picked up but the processor weighs in at only 1.6GHz.

And now for a visual, I am loving the direction the Open Source desktop environments are going with their visuals now. Everything is starting to look very clean.

Spoke too Soon

Well I have just spent about half my day chasing some errors in my Linux box. They all appear to be caused from faulty hardware but which piece, I do not know.

I actully have it running right now, and will try to leave it on overnight to test the stability. If I can’t get it working by tomarrow night, I will be moving back to the Mac Mini… at least until I can afford a new desktop.

I am now setting up a new Xen powered VPS server to host my websites. I will be using UnixShell and hope to be migrated over by tomorrow night.

Stay tuned for any updates and please excuse the dust.

Helping the Typo Community

written by edavis on February 26th, 2006 @ 08:53 AM

After much thought and review of my time and skills right now I have decided to stop developing my own Rails powered blog and instead to contribute to the Typo blogging system. I still feel that Typo has too much built in, but it is a very good system with most of the features I need and a strong (and growing) community.

So I will be trying to help improve Typo and maybe later I will come back to my own system I have been working on.
